Building Control – Area Team Leader

North West England – Hybrid
Inside IR35 (via umbrella) – Rate £90 per hour

As Principal Building Control Team Leader, you will support a forward-thinking local authority in delivering safe, compliant, and high-quality building control services. This leadership role offers the opportunity to shape service delivery, manage a skilled team, and contribute to the council’s strategic goals around safety, sustainability, and growth.
This is a hybrid role, with a strong emphasis on site-based inspections and stakeholder engagement. The council supports flexible working arrangements, allowing you to operate remotely when not required in the office or on site.
Key Responsibilities as Building Control – Area Team Leader:

  • Lead and manage Building Control Officers, trainees, and apprentices across plan assessment and site inspection.
  • Support the Head of Building Control in policy development, service planning, and regulatory enforcement.
  • Oversee major projects from pre-submission to completion, ensuring robust compliance with Building Regulations.
  • Monitor team performance against KPIs and allocate work based on competency levels.
  • Provide technical guidance, quotes, and service agreements to maintain market competitiveness.
  • Represent the council at public inquiries, stakeholder meetings, and external forums.
  • Contribute to financial planning, budget monitoring, and income generation.
  • Support the Building Safety Regulator and ensure alignment with Operational Standard Rules.

Your previous experience as Building Control – Area Team Leader:
The ideal candidate will be a qualified and experienced Building Control professional with proven leadership in a local authority setting with a Level 3H qualification.
You’ll bring:

  • Strong working knowledge of Building Regulations, enforcement procedures, and safety legislation.
  • Experience managing teams and delivering high-quality services across a varied caseload.
  • Ability to demonstrate competency to a Specialist Level in all Classes including 3H as defined in the Building Safety Regulators Competency Framework
  • Excellent communication, stakeholder engagement, and problem-solving skills.
  • A proactive, collaborative approach to service improvement and team development.
