You will step into a pivotal senior leadership role overseeing the Council’s Property, Assets, Facilities Management and Council‑owned Companies portfolio. This includes the corporate landlord function, asset strategy, compliance, disposals and acquisitions, commercial property performance, and the governance of companies with a property focus. The Council is seeking an experienced and politically astute leader who can bring stability, clarity and pace during a period of organisational change.

Your Role as Interim Director of Property & Companies

  • Providing strategic leadership and corporate accountability for the Council’s land, property and facilities management functions
  • Acting as the Council’s Corporate Landlord, setting standards and ensuring statutory compliance across the estate
  • Delivering the Council’s property and estates strategy, including rationalisation, co‑location and improved asset utilisation
  • Leading commercial property performance, identifying income opportunities, driving disposals and acquisitions, and supporting long‑term financial sustainability
  • Acting as the shareholder representative for relevant Council companies, ensuring strong governance, business plan scrutiny and performance oversight
  • Ensuring robust operational and statutory compliance, including fire safety, asbestos, legionella, gas, electrical and wider building safety
  • Overseeing high‑performing, community‑focused and cost‑effective property, asset and FM services
  • Leading change programmes to modernise services, embed new operating models, and deliver efficiencies and transformation
  • Managing significant revenue and capital budgets, ensuring strong governance, value for money and financial sustainability
  • Building strong internal and external partnerships, including with Members, Commissioners, service leads, commercial partners and local agencies
  • Providing clear, evidence‑based professional advice to senior officers and elected Members

Your Experience as Interim Director of Property & Companies

  • Significant senior leadership experience at Director or Assistant Director level within Corporate Property, Estates, Asset Management or Facilities Management
  • Proven track record leading large and complex property portfolios, including operational estate, commercial assets, disposals, acquisitions and income generation
  • Strong knowledge of statutory property compliance and risk management
  • Demonstrable experience developing and delivering property and estate strategies, including rationalisation and co‑location
  • Strong financial, commercial and contract management skills, with experience delivering savings and optimising value
  • Experience leading multi‑disciplinary teams and driving cultural and organisational change
  • Confidence working in political environments with the ability to influence Members and senior officers
  • Relevant professional qualification (RICS, IWFM, CIBSE, CIOH or equivalent)
