Top leaders of 2019 revealed at IoD Director of the Year Awards

Some of the best performing business leaders of 2019 saw their work recognised on Friday 18 October at the IoD Director of the Year Awards.

Hosted by veteran broadcaster Sir Trevor McDonald, the event took place at The Brewery in London.

Welcoming the finalists, IoD Chair Charlotte Valeur said: “Rarely have the challenges faced by directors been so vast and so varied. I believe this makes it all the more important that the IoD is ready to shine the spotlight on your success.

“Throughout the year, you have shown dedication, resilience and creativity. Each of your stories is inspiring.

“The best directors don’t just benefit their own company or their own shareholders. They certainly aren’t just in it for themselves. The best directors are an asset to the whole of their community, through the leadership they show and the new ideas they make into a reality.

“You are leading the way for British business. This is a role that is more challenging than ever. But because of that, it is all the more crucial.”

Among the winners were Pauline Howie, chief executive of the Scottish Ambulance Service, who took home the award for Public Sector Director of the Year; Margot Cronin, NED at HSBC Life and Tesco Underwriting, who was named Chartered Director of the Year; and Guy Schanschieff, founder of Bambino Mio, who was crowned International Director of the Year.

A new wave of UK entrepreneurs was also celebrated with Tom Hacquoil, Pinpoint CEO, awarded Start-Up Director of the Year; Sarah McAnallen, CEO and founder of McAnallen, named Student Director of the Year; and Oliver North, MD of O&H Vehicle Technology being crowned Young Director of the Year.

This year the Dr Neville Bain Memorial Award for excellence in director and board practice was presented to Linda Pollard, chair of Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust.

The winners were chosen by a panel of judges including Jack Parson, CEO of Big Youth Group, Helen Stephenson, chief executive of the Charities Commission, and Rosalind Singleton, MD of UK Broadband.

The awards – with sponsors including JaguarBambooCorporate TravellerHasteeIosh and TISE – brought together finalists from regional heats across the UK.
