Interim Director of Housing
Location: London (Hybrid)
Contract: Interim (initial 6 months, with potential extension)
Day Rate: £750–£800 per day (Inside IR35)
We are seeking an experienced and forward‑thinking senior housing leader to join a UK local authority as their Interim Director of Housing. This is a high‑impact role providing strategic leadership across the full Housing portfolio, with a focus on performance, HRA management, regulatory readiness and driving a major Housing Improvement Programme.
About the Interim Director of Housing role:
- Provide strategic leadership as part of the council’s Senior Leadership Team, ensuring housing priorities align with wider corporate objectives and the Medium‑Term Financial Plan.
- Oversee the full Housing Services portfolio, including Landlord Services, Housing Needs & Homelessness, HRA asset management, repairs, compliance and service performance.
- Lead a council‑wide Housing Improvement Programme, embedding best practice, strengthening assurance, and driving continuous improvement.
- Act as the council’s strategic housing advisor, shaping long‑term strategy, policy development and regulatory readiness.
- Ensure delivery of high‑performing, value‑for‑money, sustainable and customer‑focused housing services.
- Oversee major HRA‑funded programmes, investment planning, and service transformation activity.
- Provide clear, accurate and strategic reporting to senior officers, Members and external stakeholders.
- Lead multi‑disciplinary teams, promoting a collaborative, accountable and improvement‑focused culture.
Your previous experience as an Interim Director of Housing:
- Proven senior‑level experience as a Director or Assistant Director of Housing within a local authority or social housing environment.
- Strong background in strategic housing leadership, HRA management, asset management, and frontline housing operations.
- Demonstrable experience in service transformation, housing improvement programmes and operating model redesign.
- Knowledge of housing regulation, consumer standards, inspections and compliance frameworks.
- Track record of working effectively with Members, senior officers, corporate leadership and external partners.
- Experience overseeing complex budgets, major programmes and performance frameworks.
- Politically aware, collaborative and outcomes‑driven, with the ability to build confidence at all levels.
